Squeezing Money Out of It? I’m Going to Go Against the PR Grain on this One…

Recently, I was a bit stunned when class consensus seemed to accept a characterization of the Washington Post as just “not getting it” for refusing to allow advertising to dictate an Op-Ed schedule. I grant that there are sometimes serious flaws in our news organizations’ plans for staying afloat; however, journalistic integrity is not something to take lightly or mock when it is inconvenient to our public relations and communications goals. Journalistic integrity is…

There is an app for that

I've been on Twitter for a little more than a year now. I have found in my time using the site that which application or service you use you access and update your feed can really make a difference. Don't get me wrong -- the actual Twitter itself is great for straight tweeting and re-tweeting, but there are so many ways to capitalize.

I have a BlackBerry, so I have been a faithful user of UberTwitter pretty much my entire Twitter tenure. There was a moment recently when I tried to use… Continue

Back to basics: Why join social networks at all?

As we contemplate the best strategy for engaging DC's McCartney fans for the long haul with WETA, I think Joshua Porter's key motivators for participating in social networks (Designing for the Social Web, p. 97) are incredibly useful. He says that if your model has at least 2 or 3 of these core principles, you could have a solid product.

As I go through the list, I'll… Continue

Sorry Facebook. You Can't Reach Me Anymore

Last winter, the world commemorated Facebook as it celebrated its sixth birthday. Currently, over 100 million people access the popular site on their cell phones. As the numbers keep growing, I cannot help reminiscing about, the good old days. With the expansion of Facebook, I feel its popularity will decrease the effectiveness of businesses reaching the younger consumer.

The reality is there are a growing number of…

Very simple Leah, it's not the same anymore. People who want to adapt will but there is a growing number of people who are jumping ship. The environment is everything. For example foursquare is cool but no one I know uses it so I don't use…

I definitely agree and might add another metaphor - don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining! I totally understand that twitter needs to make money, just don't promote paid messages and tell me it's not an ad! Transparency…

I wonder if there is less wailing about volcano problems by popular bloggers because they might be just the demographic that can keep their life rolling with smart phones and the web. Also interesting: check out #tedxvolcano or less interesting:…

I don't really understand how the growth of Facebook could have affected the way you describe using Facebook. Can't you just not fan Sarah Palin? Can you detail more of what you think is diminishing your Facebook experience? You have a…

That's great that Toyota is beefing up their social media outreach machine, but I'm doubtful that they're rebounding in the public eye at this point, especially after fresh recalls of two new vehicles (Lexus and Sienna). I'm…

Ads on Twitter? No Biggee.

It’s official: Twitter as advertisements. Joining the ranks of its older social media brethren in monetizing their free platforms, the microblogging service started embedding “Promoted Tweets” at the top of search results last Tuesday. At the Chirp conference in San Francisco last week, Twitter COO Dick Costolo told the audience that, while businesses pay to place “Promoted…See More

It's interesting to read your comments and try to square them with my experiences on FB. While I wasn't a pioneer in the FB world (I was last in college in 1993), I have enjoyed using the app to keep track of a wide range of friends and…
