The internet is changing the way people live their lives. Our behaviors are modifying as we adopt new online tools to get our work done and socialize with friends. Savvy organizations are recognizing these changes and are using the internet to keep up.
A great example of an organization which recognizes and is responding to these changes is the FBI.
One of the FBI's best known features is their
Ten Most Wanted list. This li…

Co-creation – the idea that the best work/thoughts may not come from so-called experts in the field (though their voices will be counted), but rather from the collective meaning created by groups. The hope is that the best ideas will ultimately float to the top of the pile and will comprise of a complex mash up of voices, perspectives and expertise.
John Winsor calls it co-creation from the bottom up; posting that com…

In the past, companies assumed power and dictated to their customers in a controlling, one-way, linear relationship, which is no longer in fashion. Today, in the digital age, it is all about co-creation – an engaging, surprising and incredibly satisfying relationship - which some brands embrace and some do not. The withdrawal of the recent Motrin Mom ad campaign exemplifies the latter when it should have been the former.
James Cherkoff a…

Co-creation or the offer of a brand to share creating an experience with customers can offer an enticing method of involving people in their brand. It can be exciting when a brand we enjoy asks us for help or to participate in their offerings. But I find that I don’t have the spare time to create videos and enter co-creation contents presented by brands. Give me a simple way to get involved and I’ll more likely be hooked.

Engagement, social media, conversations, Web 2.0. In my work and through my classes I find myself swimming in the latest digital buzz words. Recently, I’ve been yearning for anything but these words, so when I get a chance to pick up a book or go to a museum – I’m re-reading
In Cold Blood (awesome!) – I am ecstatic. I think my enthusiasm about reading my book is for several reasons: it's a break from the computer, blackberry screen, work,…

Widgets are extremely portable, come in all shapes and sizes and, according to Eric Friedman author of the
Marketing.FM blog, will be the weapons used to wage the next great competitive online marketing wars. Widgets, which are basically chunks of code that allows us to interface with applications and operating systems, are critical part of most marketing plans and a critical part of my holiday planning.

The reading this week dealt with Co-Creation, or the act of collaboration by consumers to create more, or better, products for, or with, a company. While the definition may be slightly complicated, the concept is simple – fans of a product are the best source for ideas to create new products or to enhance or remove the production of existing ones. This process can be exceedingly effective in strengthening a products base, but also to energize it.
So how important is Co-Creation?
The reading fr…

Traditional marketing campaigns historically were inflexible and unresponsive to audience feedback. The Digital Age has changed marketing practices and principles. No longer can organizations choose to ignore the input of their consumers, but rather incorporate them and use them to advance their brand.
James Cherkoff and Johnnie Moore discuss open source marketing and demonstration that engagement trumps control in maximizing custome…

The Consumer Engagement blog quotes
Philip Tiongson of Organized Chaos by posing a few very relevant and critical social media questions pertaining to the buzz word “engagement.” I now discuss my answers to these questions from the Consumer Engagement January 5th post.
What does “engagement” mean?
As our Profe…

-And by "them" I mean online library catalogs.
Libraries are constantly trying new ways to provide easy, efficient service for their customers through online applications like the library catalog.
Years ago, searching for books in a library was a real headache. It meant messing around with index cards in a dusty card catalog or approaching the intimidating 50-year-old lady with blue hair and cat glasses for help. Today, the process of searching for a book has been digitized. However, depending…

The screening of
My Name Is Bruce went extremely well, but would only recommend it for fans of Bruce Campbell. With the focus of the film on the career of the character "Bruce Campbell" as a B-list actor, the various references to other Campbell films, and the cameos of
Evil Dead veterans - this film is only for those that will get the jokes. Interestingly, there were a…

The hostile media theory posits that partisans perceive the media as hostile to their point of view despite the inference of neutral parties that the same coverage is unbiased. This paradigm precludes that the distinction between opinions, protected by the first amendment, and true libel must be clear.
Scott M.Cutlip, Allen H. Center and Glen M. Broom (2006) define libel as a legal action meant to compensate…

The 2008 Presidential election was historic in so many ways. The most obvious historical change is of course the election of an African-American as leader of the free world (Barack Obama in case you hadn't heard). But this election will also be remembered by history because of the revolutionary way Barack Obama used the internet as a tool for organization and communication.
In class the oth…

In our discussion of search engines and maximizing SEO the question of whether to use the meta tag "keywords" came up. There seems to be
consensus among SEO pros that Google doesn't use them anymore. Google all but confirms this explicitly in this
short article about "Keyword Stuffing". But this got me wondering if there are other sea…

In the age of digital influence, marketers are trying to utilize each and every new Web 2.0 technique. The next step might be right before their very eyes through photo tagging.
A new viral marketing technique

The web is essentially a neighborhood bringing a variety of people to your backyard or website. As in life we don’t get to choose our neighbors and we might not necessarily like them, but if you want to throw a successful neighborhood barbeque you’ll want to know…

Sure, an entertaining video or other glitzy web trick can lure people to a website once, but how do you get people to return once the novelty wears off? I think this is one of the greatest challenges websites face in this day of media-blitzed Internet users.
Designing for the Social Web argues that organizations need to understand the audience’s motivations for visiting the website and support these motivations wit…
